Ever since he first attended one of the legendary SUNRISE parties in 1989, Tissera knew where his heart would take him. He threw himself into DJing and his natural ability behind the decks was first unleashed on an unsuspecting public over pirate radio in Lancashire in 1990.
Directing 1000s of ravers to the secret locations of the infamous Blackburn Raves, Tissera quickly became a local hero and this led to appearances at such revered clubs as the HACIENDA in Manchester and QUADRANT PARK in Liverpool. However, a warehouse party in Leeds really brought fame to Tissera, but not necessarily for the right reasons. The police arrested all 836 in attendance in the biggest mass criminal arrest since 1412. Tissera was on the decks, simply playing the music he adored, but it made no difference to the authorities. He was instantly branded the ringleader and sentenced to three months in the notorious Armley Jail in Leeds!
Far from dampen his spirits, he now had the clubscene in his blood. He settled at the mighty ARK in Leeds, where he played to 2,500 people every month until Ark finally ended in 1997. Such was the following he inspired, that the gospel according to Tissera rapidly spread not only around the UK, but also further afield.
As well as a residency at Ibiza's newest superclub EDEN last year, he was one of the first British DJs to regularly play in Australia, sometimes making up to 5 visits a year to play everywhere from Sydney to Adelaide.
Back home all the major players were after a piece of the pie. The relentless travelling around the motorway networks over the years was rewarded with gigs at such household names as the MINISTRY OF SOUND, Gatecrasher, THE GALLERY, SLINKY and CLUB UK.
What has he been up to?
If you really want to catch Tissera in his element, where better than at one of his current residencies. His energy-fuelled blend of hard house and trance was immediately a favourite with the Nation's most outrageous club, SUNDISSENTIAL. Time after time the full houses waiting expectedly to hear him play led them to install him as a host not only at their northern home in Leeds, but also at their events in Birmingham and Manchester - the only DJ to be resident at all three! Priding himself on an ability to play in any style, tailoring his sound to suit each individual crowd, his most recent appointment has been at 'UNION' at THE SPACE in Leeds. Playing a more progressive sound, he controls the main room every Friday alongside a "Who's Who" of the world's premier DJ talent.
If all this wasn't enough, there is far more to the man like Rob Tissera. Where better to portray his effervescent personality than over the airwaves? From 1996 he hosted the 9pm-11pm Saturday show on KISS FM in both Leeds and Manchester, then continued with this slot when GALAXY FM took over the franchise - tens of thousands of clubbers using Tissera's soundtrack as the perfect start to their night out. In December 1998, an opportunity for national exposure saw Tissera move to the revamped BPM on ATLANTIC 252 and his show went out every Friday for a year from midnight-2am - carefully programmed into a completely seamless two hour mix of music, something of a rarity in today's dance music radio
You Tube Video Footage.
The final feather in his cap, and the area that is closest to many DJs' hearts, is the craving to produce their own music. Unsurprisingly, Tissera is no stranger to fame in this field either, gaining widespread club success with his feelgood production (under his own name), the "Relight My Fire" sampling "Kick Up The Volume". To date he has remixed or produced over 35 tracks, including Armand Van Helden's first UK single "Deep Creed" and the classic piano-house anthem "JJ Tribute" by ASHA.
When it comes to original productions, the past two years have really showcased just what Tissera is capable of. Together with Ian Bland (of Dream Frequency and Dancin' Divaz fame) they formed QUAKE, and the repercussions have been felt all over the industry. Their first single, "The Day Will Come", shot straight into the national Top 30 and as a result they were commissioned to produce 3 tracks for last year's cult clubbing film HUMAN TRAFFIC (with the Ministry Magazine Awards singling out "Mantra" as the standout track from the movie).
Eager to sprinkle some of the Quake magic across their productions, offers of remix work have been flooding in. They have now completed over 15 reworkings for artists such as DA HOOL, ATB, NALIN & KANE, BLANK & JONES and ONE PHAT DEEVA (many of which featured on compilations from the likes of Ministry, Kiss and Gatecrasher) while their recent interpretations for ARMIN and FRIDGE II look set to follow in the footsteps of their mix of YORK's "The Awakening", which hit the national charts at Number 11.
Whether it be producing, remixing, radio presenting or where he really holds the key - controlling the dancefloor from behind a pair of turntables - Rob Tissera is a man who eats, sleeps and breathes dance music. He's devoted his life to entertaining a crowd through the way he knows best. Don't miss out on a taste of Tissera.
